Paul D. Burns, 73, of Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of Seymour, Iowa, died June 19, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, surrounded by his family. He was the son of Leon and Opal (Boyer) Burns and was born Sept. 13, 1939, near Moravia. He graduated from Seymour High School in Seymour.
After graduation, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years. On Nov. 1, 1964, he was united in marriage to Betty Fenton. He was employed by Caterpillar Tractor in Mount Joy as a heat treat operator and retired in 1988. Paul then moved his family to Moberly, Mo., where he began working for Dura Automotive as a heat treat supervisor until retiring from there in 2002. He and his wife later moved to Urbandale to be closer to his family. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.
His parents; infant son, Jeffrey Burns and uncle, Paul E. Burns, preceded him in death.
Paul is survived by his wife, Betty Burns of Urbandale; son, Dan Burns of Coralville; daughter, Shelley (Rob) Wells of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jeff (Jessica) Wells of Grimes and Shawn Wells of Ankeny; great-grandson, Jensen Wells of Grimes and sisters, Karen Mattly of Corydon and Linda (Bob) Espenson of Duluth, Minn.
A memorial service was held June 22 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with Rev. Dave Abram officiating.
Musical selections were “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “You Raise Me Up.”
Memorials may be sent to Faith Lutheran Church or Mercy Hospice.
Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville was in charge of arrangement.
