Marietta I. Smith, 85, of Des Moines, entered into heaven’s gate Aug. 5, 2014, at Kavanaugh House.

Marietta was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Unionville, Mo. She was the daughter of Emmett and Madge Fortune Callaway and was raised in Corydon.

Marietta married Russell L. Smith in 1967 and together they blended a family of nine children. Marietta retired from Firestone Tire Company as a secretary in 1983 and then worked as a bookkeeper for the First Assembly of God Church for 26 years.

Marietta touched so many lives by the way she lived; she cared for everyone and shared Christ with all she met. Everyone that knew her knew she was a faithful servant of God. She was a blessing to all, and we will miss her, but she is now dancing on both her feet at Jesus’ feet.

Marietta is survived by her children, Mark Lawson of Des Moines, Rebecca (LeRoy) Cunningham of Humeston, Rachel (Melvin) Cunningham of Norwalk, Sharon (Richard) O’Brien of Des Moines, Charles (Glenda) Smith of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Esther (Gary) Jahnke of Des Moines and Stephen (Annee) Smith of West Des Moines; 28 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Russell, in 2012; children, Tim Lawson and Debbie Lawson and sister, Nadina Hartman, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Aug. 11 at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with burial to follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

As a show of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
