Velma Kathryn Gardner, 85, of Clio, passed away March 10, 2017, at a Corydon Specialty Care.

She was born Aug. 25, 1931, at home near Mercer, Mo., the seventh of eight children of Jesse and Edna (Retherford) McReynolds.

Velma attended the upper Girdner School for her first two years and then as this school closed, she attended school at Mercer, graduating in May of 1949.

On June 15, 1949, she married Morris Gene Gardner of Clio. On June 15, 1951, they were blessed with a daughter, Jo Ann. He preceded her in death on April 21, 2010, after 60 years of marriage.

Except for a few months in Des Moines, where Morris was employed at Solar Aircraft, their entire married life was spent at Clio until Morris entered the nursing home in October 2007.

In 1957, Velma started working at the Clio Post Office as postmaster leave replacement. As the level of the post office fluctuated she held different positions until the death of the postmaster in 1977. She then served as officer in charge until March 5, 1983, when she was appointed postmaster. She retired Oct. 31, 2004.

Velma enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, going to music festivals, dancing and her flowers and lawn ornaments.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Dick Dale; four brothers, Freddie, Eldon, Howard and Albert McReynolds; two sisters, Edna Susan McReynolds and Rose Ella Holmes; sisters-in-law, Maggie, Velma, Helen, Margaret and Cora McReynolds, Bonnie Hill and Aida Hilliard and Donna Johnston; brothers-in-law, Jimmie Cox, Frank Holmes, Hubert “Red” Hill, Bill Hilliard and Dale Johnston and special friend, Buford Richardson.

Survivors include her granddaughters, Julie (Mike) Boord, Kansas City, Mo. and Lisa Dale of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Cassidy and Brennan Boord and Taylor, Falon and Jaxon Dale; great-great-grandchildren, Karlie, Kian and Alayna Dale; brother, Jesse (Barbara Naomi) McReynolds, Lenexa, Kan.; sister-in-law, Linda Dilliner and many nieces and nephews

Funeral services were held March 15 at Roberson Funeral Home in Lineville.

Burial will follow in the Clio Cemetery.
