Falcons finish strong second place at McClymonds Relays

CHARITON WINS MONDAY’S MEET, BUT WAYNE SCORES MOST POINTS OF 1A SCHOOLS

At the 2017 McClymonds Relays at Saling Athletic Complex, the Wayne boys finished 2nd to Chariton, but scored the most points of Class 1A schools with 134. Twin Cedars finished 3rd with 108.66, Moravia scored 41 points, Melcher-Dallas 24.33, Seymour 21, Mormon Trail 17, and Moulton-Udell 14.

The Falcons won 3 relay events. The team of Brooks Jacobsen, Hunter Cobb, Chasen Kiefer and Alex Chapman won the 4x100 and 4x200 in 48.29 and 1:40.72, respectively. The shuttle hurdle team of Michael Alexander, Chapman, Sawyer Nickell and Bronson Carpenter finished 1st in 1:08.49.

The sprint medley team of Shayden Arnold, Cobb, Kiefer and Carpenter were edged out by Chariton’s last-second, come-from-behind effort in 1:42.87. The 4x400-meter team of Nick Mattly, Arnold, Kiefer and Cobb also placed 2nd to Chariton in 3:55.43.

The 4x800 team of Ben Saunders, Arnold, Housley and Will Schultz placed 3rd in 10:25.39. The distance medley team of Jacobsen, A.J. Baker, Mattly and Ben Saunders finished 5th in 4:37.69.

In Wayne’s other 1st place finish, Nickell won the long jump in 17 feet, 10.5 inches. Having to split his time in the high jump with a grueling relay run, Carpenter placed 3rd in 5 feet, 2 inches. Kyle Andrews finished 4th in the shot put at 37 feet, 8.75 inches, and 5th in the discus at 101 feet, 11 inches.

Alexander finished 2nd in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.27, and 3rd in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.61, with teammate Sawyer close behind in 19.93.

Two Falcons ran sub 6 minutes in the 1,600-meter. Freshman Scott Hoelting placed 3rd in 5:27.12, and Grady Carpenter finished 6th in 5:59.16. In the 3,200-meter, Hoelting came in 4th with a time of 11:51.93, and Carpenter placed 5th in 12:37.58.

In the 800-meter run, Will Schultz came from behind in the last few feet to place 5th with a time of 2:30.47.

Bronson Carpenter earned 2nd in the 400-meter dash in 55.73 seconds. Stetson Baker finished 3rd in the 100-meter dash in 12:61, and Jacobsen 4th in 12.79. Chapman finished 3rd behind 2 Chargers in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25 even.

At the Ike Ryan Relays in Eddyville on April 20, the Falcons finished 5th out of 9 teams with 62 points. Bronson Carpenter was Wayne’s lone 1st place finished with a 54.46 in the 400-meter dash. Carpenter also placed 3rd in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches, while Schultz placed 6th in 4 feet, 10 inches.

Andrews finished 2nd in the shot put and the discus with throws of 39 feet, 2 inches and 96 feet, 8 inches respectively.

Chapman placed 4th in the 200-meter dash in 25.85. In the 3,200-meter run, Grady Carpenter and Scott Hoelting finished 4th and 5th in 12:30.57 and 12:42.81 respectively.

Wayne next runs at Mount Ayr April 25, 5 p.m., and at Prairie City-Monroe April 27, 5 p.m.
