A stormy night for Lenox

The Lenox Tigers came onto Epperly Field Friday night to test the Falcons will and to digest how they would bounce back from a 37-18 loss to Moravia a week ago in the Falcon home opener.
The Tigers had put together point totals of 34 and 36 in their two losses this season, but coming off a big win last week and proving that they were able to put some big digit numbers on the board, beating Essex 52-14: if that score sounds familiar it was 50-14 with the Falcons on the short end of last seasons meeting between these two district foes, the game that was held up by some lightning in the area ... but there would be no lightning delays in this matchup.
Lightning strikes came in the form of Falcons leading rushers Chase Kiefer and Hunter Cobb... striking often, creating a first half storm and dark cloud the Tigers would not recover from, Kiefer carried the ball 10 times in the opening half: scoring on 3 of those and totaling 173 yards, while Cobb broke out of the Tiger defense for a run of 78 yards and a TD. Blake Moore showed his steady game of directing traffic and rushing for 18 yards. A two point conversion on a Kiefer run gave the Falcons a 26-16 halftime lead over the Tigers.
In second half action the Tigers or Falcons would not get into the end zone with penalties again taking both teams out of scoring drives and opportunities. Kiefer would carry the ball 17 more times in the second half and bring his total to 242 total yards in the game and bringing (my unofficial) season total to 649 yards in the 3 games so far.
The Falcon defense! Again shows up for this big game...keeping the passing and running game at bay in the second half: in a defensive battle against the persistent Tigers. Hunter Clark was in the face of the Tiger offense all night: leading in tackles with at least 12 and Chase Kiefer with 11. Big plays in the shape of Matt Bellon, Troy Arnold, Spencer Buban and Ryan McConahay came through with 4 huge sacks that took the Tigers out of scoring drives. Stetson Baker was in the mix with many tackles and more assists. Arnold and Buban producing fumbles and Falcon recoveries. Logan Smith came into the game and made a big stop for loss as the Tigers were driving. Caleb Pounds also made his presence known with a couple of crucial stops.
It is a feeling that the Falcons are ready to get back to business, as their defense had life and determination, with fewer penalties in this contest: that 1 or 2 that took them out of scoring range along with a couple of arm tackles that got little results; but there is that good feeling that these Falcons are coming together and maturing fundamentally as a team and the character of these young men and coaches will prevail and keep the goal in sight.
Final score Falcons 26 Tigers 16, getting the Falcons to 2-1 on the season so far.
Falcons travel to Stanton Friday night…see you at the game.
