The BrickHouse in Allerton is now open for business! The BrickHouse officially opened Jan. 19. Justin Wyatt, who opened in part because bars have been a family business for many generations, owns the bar. Before you could serve whiskey, his family was running bars. His great-grandmother owned a bar in Wayne County. According to Wyatt, his mother was the brain behind the operation.
The BrickHouse is named after the building that houses it. Currently the bar is only accessible through the backdoor, as the main room is to be expanded into. Wyatt stated that he has plans to add a snooker table when he opens the larger room, as well as more coin-operated pool tables. Currently there is one pool table, newly felted and one dollar per game. Dances are also planned for the larger room in the future.
The bar is geared towards an older tavern feeling.
Wyatt said, “It’s a nice easygoing place where people can sneak in and have a beer or two.”
Wyatt also stated that there are many additions planned for the future, but for now it will be kept simple. A jukebox is to be installed very soon. Cable is available for sports viewing. The bar will also have standard bar snacks.
The current opening is simply a soft opening. A grand opening will be set in about a month. Wyatt plans to have bag games, door prizes during the day and a dance in the evening.
Much of the interior items have been repurposed. Wyatt obtained two round tables and many chairs form the Grismore restaurant in town. He also obtained the other tables and booths from the old bar down the road.
The BrickHouse will serve the standard beers, such as Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light and Busch Light in cans and bottles. They will also serve Coors Banquet, Michelob Golden Light, Michelob Ultra and Bud Light Lime in bottles. Cans of beer are $2.25 and bottles are $2.75. Aluminum pints of Michelob Ultra and Bud Light are $3. Crafts beers are $3. The beers available are Smirnoff Ice Screwdriver, Smirnoff Ice Grape, Redd’s Apple Ale and Blue Moon. Slingshot and Exile Ruthie are Iowa beers that are also available.
Many types of liquor are also available to purchase. The highest shelf liquor will be the Clase Azul Tequila, tequila imported from Mexico that comes in a hand-blown glass bottle. This shot is $22 in Des Moines. At The BrickHouse, it is only $10 per shot.
The BrickHouse is located in Allerton, just south of the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat, in the old American Legion Building. Customers enter in the back of the building. Parking is available on the main street and on the side of the street next to the bar. The BrickHouse is currently open Tues. through Sat. from 11 a.m. to closing time. Mondays may be added in the future.
“Come in and have fun!”
