Three lanes or four, what do the people want?
That is the question facing elected officials of the city of Corydon and they want the public to help them with the answer.
Members of the council held a work session Jan. 20 at the Wayne County Hospital where they participated in a phone conference with Chuck Belgarde of the Iowa Department of Transportation regarding the portion of Highway 14 between the alley south of Casey’s General Store and the underpass at the north edge of Corydon.
The DOT plans resurfacing work on that section of the highway. Bids will be let March 16 for the resurfacing. The DOT recommends a conversion of the present four lanes, two in each direction, to three lanes.
The conversion would allow for a northbound and a southbound lane with a 10-foot turning lane in the center. There would be five-foot shoulders on both the west and east sides. Four sets of signs designating a center turning lane would be installed along the route.
The conversion to three lanes is recommended by the DOT because of maintenance and not for safety reasons. With this remarking, the wear and tear on the curb and gutter area would be significantly less.
The council is requesting input from business owners along Highway 14 and the public who travel that portion of the highway. Write or call city hall during February to voice your opinion, three lanes, including one each way and a turning lane, or four lanes.
