Eleven board members and three guests arrived for the Wayne County Fair Board meeting Feb. 4.
Plans for the 2010 county fair are coming closer to final but there will be tweaking going on over the next months.
Entertainment coming to the fair will include Mr. Nick, a magician and balloon artist, a face painter and a hypnotist. Cost for the tractor pull went up to $1,850 for the classes. There will be a local pickup pull.
Heartland Rodeo will again bring two nights of action to the fair at a cost of $11,550. Consensus of the board members was to stay with Heartland after having a successful run with the rodeo company.
May Demo Derby
The Spring Fling Demo Derby is changing weekends. Previously it has been held on Memorial Day weekend but it is hard to find help for the event when people want to be out of town on the first summer holiday.
The group voted to set the event for May 1, the first Saturday in the month. The date will be early enough so it won’t conflict with Mother’s Day or graduations.
Reaching that decision took much discussion. If farming is progressing, pull-back tractors will be in the fields as will much of the volunteer help.
Galen Lunsford made the motion to go with May 1 for the demo. The motion was seconded by Jody Jones but he said it was “with hesitation and deep regret.”
A new rule will be in effect for the group running the concession stand. It will be their job to pick up trash following the event. Board members said it wasn’t fair board trash and they want the grounds to look good for the next day.
Spring supper and pie auction
The fair board sponsored supper and auction is set for Saturday, Feb. 27 with entertainment by Marjorie Horton.
4-H clubs in the county will act as hosts and provide salads and desserts. Burton Prunty will be cooking the meat for sandwiches.
Fall supper and auction
Oct. 30 was picked for the fall fund raising supper. Last year the event fell on Millerton’s fall bazaar and supper. In order to avoid a conflict, board members chose to go earlier and only buck up against Halloween.
Bull riding
The idea of sponsoring a bull riding competition had been discussed as a possible fundraiser. Shawn Ballard is a local contractor who leases his bulls to other rodeo strings. He came to tell them what it takes to hold a successful bucking.
He said it is important to be self- funded. Have the money in place with sponsorships and donations and do not rely on ticket sales to pay the bills.
“Raise the money before you sell a ticket. Bull riding events are different than rodeos,” he said.
Featuring a bull that has been invited to a PBR event draws good riders in for a rodeo or bull riding. A fair payout for a bull riding is also important.
Board members decided they were not ready for such an event now but it could be a future consideration. Ballard was thanked for coming and telling them what will or won’t work,
