The Wayne County Board of Supervisors made short work of routine business at their regularly scheduled Feb. 8 meeting. In attendance were Chairperson Charlie Horton, Jerry O’Dell, Don Greenlee and County Auditor Sue Ruble.

Lisa Holt of Custom Insurance Services was on hand to explain what it would mean to accept volunteer help at the Wayne County parks for the 2010 season. Concern about insurance coverage and county liability had been previously discussed.

Several residents have expressed a desire to help the Wayne County Conservation Department during the summer mowing season by using their own personal lawn care equipment to keep the grounds in the parks in good shape.

Holt explained the insurance policy the county already has in place will cover a total limit of 10 volunteers the way it stands now. The policy covers a limited amount towards medical coverage as well as liability coverage for the county. It will cost an additional $10 for each person above that number and specific paperwork must be filled out by anyone offering to volunteer before they can help with the parks.

Holt offered to attend the next Conservation Board meeting to present the information to the board. The Supervisors accepted the offer. As Jerry O’Dell put it, “Everyone pulling in the same direction is the only way we’ll get anything done.”

O’Dell also noted during the meeting that a Promise City resident had expressed concern that after several attempts they had not been able to make contact with the Wayne County Attorney. The resident wanted clarification of a nuisance issue and cited Iowa code #657.1 as the reference point.

Insurance on the county farm buildings was also discussed. While there won’t be an assessment on the garage and the smaller outbuildings, the larger pole buildings still “looked pretty good” as O’Dell stated it. The Supervisors were going to make a visit to the farm to see if any repairs are needed to keep the larger buildings in good shape.

Other business unanimously accepted:
• approval of Mormon Trail Special Election results – votes 39 yes, 14 no.
• approved Chariton Valley Planning information.
• approved a 28e Multi-County Drug Task agreement.
• approved a Courthouse Security Plan.

A special supervisor board meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 10, to announce a replacement for Horton who has resigned from the board. The effective start date for the new supervisor will be Feb. 27.
