JAMES REX ALLEN
James Rex Allen, son of Ray and Mary (Reed) Allen was born in Wayne County on Nov. 24, 1930, and passed away at Davis Center on Oct. 23, 2011, at the age of 80.
After graduation from Sewal High School in 1948, he served with the 34th division of the National Guard from 1950 to1956.
In May 1953, he was married to Roberta Williams. Four sons were born to this union, Jim, Larry, Matt and Bobby.
Rex and Roberta were engaged in farming and raising cattle. They purchased a farm south of Allerton and later moved east of Humeston. In 2000, they bought a home and moved south of Humeston.
Rex’s parents, Ray and Mary Allen; brother, Charles; brother-in-law, Burris Havner and great- granddaughter, Sydney Allen preceded him in death.
Left to mourn his passing are wife, Roberta; sons, Jim, Larry, Matt (Vangie) and Bobby (Deb); 10 grandchildren, Bridget (Bryan) Klessel, Tiffany (Alex) Allen, Trayson Allen, Nickie (Jason) Allen, Alesha Allen, Heather (Justin) Riddle, Michele (Justin) Crompton, Chris (Alicia) Allen, Amy (John) Carey and Cody Allen; eight great- grandchildren, Samual Klessel, Lauren Allen, Johnny Carey, Christian Carey, Jacob Carey, Emory Elkins, Hayden Elkins and Berlynn Allen and sisters, Lorraine Havner and Reva (Walt) Trembly.
Graveside services were held Oct. 26 at the Humeston Cemetery with Pastor Joe Moreno officiating.
Casket bearers were his grandchildren.
Randolph-Black Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET JANE MANNING
Margaret Jane Manning, 87, of DeKalb, Ill., died Oct. 27, 2011, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center in DeKalb.
Jane was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Corydon, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Eleanor (Walker) Carris. She spent her childhood in Washington and Corydon, where she lived with her extended family.
Jane attended Drake University where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. There, her dear friends, Phil and Jean May, introduced her to her future husband, Bradley Manning. She graduated in 1946 with a degree in political science. Jane and Brad were married Sept. 21, 1946, in Corydon.
They started their family in Rochelle, Ill., and later moved to DeKalb. She enjoyed her years as a mother raising her five children. Later, she followed a lifelong interest in healthcare by becoming an RN through Kishwaukee College’s Nursing program. She then worked at Oak Crest and NIU Health Services. She thoroughly enjoyed having a career of her own.
Community involvement included membership at First Lutheran Church of DeKalb, PEO Chapter IV, Thursday Arts and Drama Clubs. She served several organizations including Ben Gordon Center and Family Service Agency.
Jane was a lifelong learner. She read voraciously, traveled extensively and gardened with enthusiasm. Nothing pleased her more than to have her whole family sitting at one table, especially on Christmas Eve.
Jane will be dearly missed by her children, Dr. Bradley L. and wife Susan Manning Jr. of Madison, Wis., Anne and husband Clem Stiely of DeKalb, the Rev. Elizabeth and husband James Mascal of Mount Carroll, Patrick and wife Karen Manning of DeKalb and Mary and husband Drew Cullum of Libertyville; grandchildren, Sarah and husband Jeff Golden, Dr. Bradley L. and wife Dr. Emily Hill Manning III, John Stiely, Stuart and wife Megan Manning, Patrick and wife Jennifer Manning, Matthew Mascal, Ben and wife Natalie Manning, Charles Manning, Margaret Mascal, Kathryn Manning, Kelsey Cullum, Annie Cullum and Joe Cullum and six great-grandchildren, Sean, Sadie, Lauren, Nolan, Alyssa and Aidan.
Her husband, Bradley, on March 30, 2011; parents; and sister, Gertrude Carris preceded her in death.
The memorial service will be held at Nov. 10 at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St., DeKalb, with the Rev. Marilyn G. Hanson officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at the church. Private interment will be at Lawnridge Cemetery, Rochelle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Margaret Jane Manning Memorial Fund, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

MARY MADYLEE MCELFISH
Mary Madylee McElfish, daughter of Oliver and Hester (Jacobs) Bright, was born near Lineville, Iowa, on Sept. 1, 1923, and passed away on Oct. 26, 2011, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 88.
Mary was united in marriage to Claud Junior “Bease” McElfish on Dec. 6, 1941. Claud preceded her in death May 12, 1997.
Mary was raised in the Lineville, Iowa, community, where she lived most of her life, and farmed with her husband, Claud. She also worked as a cook in restaurants in Lineville, and Mercer, Mo., for several years and later was employed by O’Brien Brothers in Leon until her retirement. She has made her home in Council Bluffs for the past 10 years.
Mary enjoyed crocheting, gardening, playing bingo, and especially loved being with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her parents and two brothers, Paul and Earl Bright preceded her in death.
She is survived by daughter, Paulett McIntosh and son-in-law, Donnie of Council Bluffs; son, Roy McElfish and daughter-in-law, Becky of Leon; four grandchildren, Tammy Bennett and husband Phil of Bethany, Mo., Mark McElfish of Lineville and Marquitta and Mathew McElfish, both of Leon; nine great-grandchildren, John, Ashley, and Whitney Bennett, Tylor, Tucker, and Tanner Perkins, Sierra McElfish, Erica Kauzlarich, and Cinzie McElfish; sister-in-law, Clara Bright of Des Moines and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services and burial were held on Oct. 29 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville with Pastors Max Carmichael and Ron Helton officiating,
Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
