EDNA JOHNSON
Edna Faye Johnson, 97, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Humeston and Lineville, Iowa, died June 14, 2013, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born May 13, 1916, at Foster, Neb., the daughter of Edwin and Myrtle Croshaw Barrett.
When Edna was very young her father died and her mother married Hans Nielsen, he took her in as his own and provided a wonderful home. She graduated from Plainview High School in Nebraska with the class of 1932. She completed Normal training and taught country school.
On Dec. 24, 1935, she was united in marriage to Marvin Johnson in Nebraska; he died Dec. 29, 1981. Following their marriage Edna stayed home to care for her family. Later in life she worked at various restaurants and took care of elderly people in their homes. She is in the political history books as being the first female mayor elected in Lineville. She was very active in her church and was a member of the Humeston Garden Club. She held many positions in the Decatur County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed reading and gardening. In 2001 Edna moved away from Humeston to be closer to her family.
She is survived by three daughters, Marva Place of Oskaloosa, Sandra (Marvin) Munyon of Watertown, Wis., and Mary Grace Marshall of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; 27 great- grandchildren; 11 great-great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents; son, Vernon Johnson; grandson, Gary Johnson; two sons-in-law, Charles Place and Dwight Marshall and five brothers, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held June 18 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville with Marvin Munyon officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery near Lineville.
The Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church.
