Gary Rodger Banks, 74, of Seymour passed away at home Oct. 17, 2013.
He was born Nov.17, 1938, at the home of his parents Lloyd M. and Edna L. (Adamson) Banks near Cincinnati, Iowa. Gary graduated from Seymour Community High School. He entered the United States Army in 1957 and completed Basic Training at Fort Polk, La. Specialist Banks received his parachutist wings after completing intensive ground and aerial training.
After discharge from the Army, Gary began farming with his dad and also carrying mail for the United States Postal Service. He moved from the farm in 1975 and started Circlin’ B Farm Implement Company on the south side of Seymour. Later in life, Gary pursued his love of antiques by opening Lonesome Dove Enterprises (The Shoppes on Wall Street) on the Seymour Square.
Gary married Sandra Dove in June of 1962. They were blessed with three children, Lisa (Rich) Carter of Seymour, Beth (Tony) Mannella of Georgia and Justin (Kristie) Banks of Wyoming. Gary was a proud of his grandchildren, Sarah, Samantha and Seth Carter; Patrick and Miranda Mannella and Tyler, Jonathan, Nicolas, Joshua and Alyssa Banks. Gary was especially enjoyed his great-grandchildren, Laudia Carter, Piper Jones and Asher Jones.
Gary loved history, especially regarding the civil war. He had a special interest in the history of the town of Seymour and even produced a pictorial history book of Seymour. Gary could be counted on for friendly conversation with anyone who stopped by his store. He was an honest man who embodied the spirit of determination and self-reliance. His love of nature and giving demeanor will be fondly remembered.
His grandson, Seth Carter; parents, Lloyd and Edna Banks and sister, Patricia, preceded him in death.
His sister Sherry Johnson of Florida, many cousins and a host of friends survive him.
Funeral services were held Oct. 22 at the Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour with Pastor Mike Finn officiating.
Musical selections were “When I Get Where I’m Going” and “If I Had Only Known with pianist Mary Parker and vocalist Don Liggett.
Casket bearers were Richard Carter, Nicolas Banks, Tony Mannella, Justin Banks, Joshua Banks and Patrick Mannella.
Honorary bearers were Tyler Banks and Jonathan Banks.
Interment was in the Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour.
Seymour American Legion Post #180 provided military rites.
Randolph-Black Funeral Home in Corydon were in charge of arrangements.
