Andrew and Mary Goben have been chosen as the Young Settler of the year at Corydon’s Old Settlers celebration. The Goben’s moved to Corydon just a little over a year ago after buying Rod’s Auto from Rod Parham and opening Goben Automotive. Andrew is a 2000 graduate of Wayne Community and his wife, Mary, is a 2001 graduate of Chariton. They have two children, Benton, 15, and Ava, 12. They had previously resided in Indianola and wanted to raise their family a smaller community.
Andrew said, “The close knit community that we both grew up in is what we wanted for our kids. It was the main draw. Knowing you can let your kids run around town and be safe. And the smaller school.”
After graduation Andrew attended Des Moines Area Community College and received his associates degree in auto repair. He also attended Ford Assest training and is a fully certified master mechanic.
Mary attended Mercy College of Health Sciences and received her degree as an registered nurse, specializing in obstetrics and post partum working for 13 years. Now she is the Corydon & Allerton Chamberof Commerce secretary, teaches body pump at the Prairie Trails Fitness Center, teaches a womens Bible study class and was a coach for the Corydon Majors.
The Goben family are active members of Cornerstone Community Church in Chariton.
Andrew also remarked, “One of the best things about coming back is how welcoming the community has been to our kids. Our kids were nervous about coming to Corydon. After the first day of school they both came home with lots of new friends.”
Mary was excited when Benton told her he was quite happy living in Corydon. Neither of the kids have said they want to go back to Indianola.
“I’m just blown away with the community down here, and how much our kids like it here in Corydon,” said Andrew.
“We’ve seen a lot of younger families come back to Corydon and that is very encouraging,” Mary said.
We are very honored to be named the Young Settlers of the year.
Andrew is the son of Mark and Diane Goben of Altoon and Mary is the daughter of Lois and Don Dixon of Chariton and Lauren and Galen Jessen of Novelty, Mo.
