Dr. Charles Hughes is speaker at Old Settlers
by Rhonda Bennett
A 1967 graduate of Wayne Community High School, Dr. Charles Hughes, will be the Old Settler’s speaker this year. Hughes is the son of Harold and Evelyn Hughes Van Winkle, who owned and operated Hughes Appliances on the west side of the Corydon square for many years. Hughes is married to Judy Engle, a Corydon native. They have three sons living in California, Oregon and Washington plus two grandchildren. They currently live in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he is a dermatologist.
Hughes graduated from the University of Iowa in 1971 and Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1975. Hughes did his residency in Normandy Hospitals in St. Louis, Mo., from 1976 to 1979. He has been board certified by American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology since 1981. He began his private practice in Colorado Springs in 1979.
He is on staff at Penrose/St. Francis Hospitals and a member of many local, state and national medical and dermatology organizations.
Hughes has held many positions including: Emeritus Member of the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology, serving as chairman, vice chairman and secretary; president of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology from 1982-83; Chief of Staff at Eisenhower Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from 1985-86. He is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Awards are no stranger to him in his over 40 years of practice: AOCD Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009; Fellow of Distinction from American Osteopathy College of Dermatology and Fellow American Academy of Dermatology.
Hughes is an assistant professor at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Denver and helps train future physicians from several medical schools.
He is in the process of retiring from his practice and patients, so he and his wife may have more time to travel, visit their three sons and grandchildren on the west coast and enjoy all that Colorado has to offer.
