Sterling Berndt

As several tuned in to watch the Class 1A State Championship game on July 25, a familiar Wayne Community School student’s face appeared on the field following the conclusion of the game. Sterling Berndt, an upcoming sophomore student was named to the 2019 Class 1A State All-Tournament team.

Berndt was the starting pitcher on the mound this season for the Lady Falcons and helped lead her team to the state tournament for the first time in the five years for Wayne.

Before state tournament action, Berndt stepped up to the plate 106 times and made every single at bat count. She finished the season without ever striking out in the batters box.

She led the Lady Falcons and the entire Pride of Iowa Conference this season with a batting average of .528. That impressive stat also landed her 8th in the state in all of Class 1A.

From the mound Berndt recorded 238 strikeouts on the season before state tournament time which landed her in 2nd in conference and 6th overall in Class 1A.

While in Fort Dodge she continued adding to her stats with 5 hits, 1 run, 2 stolen bases and 2 RBI’s from the plate. While on the mound she struck out 11 batters in 11 innings.
