Wayne Community School

As the regular meeting of the Wayne Community School Board was called to order on Oct. 21, a public hearing was held on the proposed issuance of approximately $2,500,000 school infrastructure sales, services and use tax revenue refunding bonds.

“Due to higher interest rates being available we can save approximately $105,000 in bond repayments which would be a reduction of 22.89 percent of our remaining interest costs,” said Superintendent Mike Still. “This public hearing is now required as of July 1, 2019, so the process wasn’t nearly as extensive before as it is now.”

‘I’m curious how many people signed up to publicly oppose the school saving $105,000?” joked Kevin Comer.

“Right now, nobody,” stated Still. “They will have 14 days to file after today’s date if they wish to do so.”

“I don’t see any negative effects of approving this, only positive,” Still added. “It will save the district money so I recommend approving the resolution to move this process forward.”

Later in the regular meeting, the resolution was approved by the board to move forward with the refinancing.

In other regular business, the board approved a resignation request from bus driver Charlie Carpenter to move from fulltime employee status to a PRN basis.

The board approved a part-time elementary special education associate contract for Carrie Gassman, head junior high girls basketball contract for Jeff Whitehall and assistant high school girl’s basketball contract for Mike Snyder.

Two open enrollments were approved for students enrolling out of the district while three were approved for open enrollment into Wayne school district.

The winter sports officials list was approved with the notation it is currently not filled but would be revisited at the November meeting with hopes to have all games and events filled at that time.

Joel Petty and Kandi Hackett were present to give elementary and junior high and high school student council updates.

Still informed the board information is still being gathered regarding the purchase of a skid loader for the district’s use including the possibility of purchasing a used skid loader.

The next regular board meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
