1978-1979 Basketball team

Following the great turnout from the 40-year reunion held for the 1978-1979 Wayne Falcon football team, it was decided to do the same for the basketball team. The 1978-1979 Wayne Falcon football team was honored for their achievements as the first conference champions, first undefeated regular season, being the first team to make state playoffs in the Elite 8 and was ranked seventh in state Class 2A during that season.

The 1978-1979 Wayne Falcon basketball team coached by Paul McFarland, unfortunately did not reach the Elite 8 in state tournament action as they were beaten out in sub-state play to the number one team in the state, Iowa City Regina. They did however have much success to be recognized for.

They finished their season as conference champions, were undefeated in regular season with their only loss coming from sub-state action, they were ranked third in Class 1A and 17th in all Classes 1A-3A and they were tournament champions at Corning Holiday, sectionals and districts. This team finished out their year with a 24-1 record, which remains the most wins in Wayne school history.

During this season, the Wayne Falcons scored 2,005 points while holding their opponents to 1,315 points. This was an average of 80.2 points per game for the Falcons offense.

A key point for the success the Falcons seen on court was their high-pressure defense. This led to many fast break opportunities.

A reunion has been set for Friday, Feb. 8 at the Wayne High School gym where the team will be introduced between games that evening against Melcher-Dallas. The varsity team members along with coaches, statisticians and managers are being contacted asking for their attendance at this game for the reunion evening.

Senior members from the ‘78-‘79 season were Dave Wetzel, Rob Wood, Tork Harman, Jeff Douglas, John Anderson, Jim Bode and Dave Davis. Members from Wayne Falcons roster that has passed since the ‘78-‘79 season are Assistant Coach Jim Douglas and team members Wood and Don Campbell.
