School Board

Kristina Pollock, the newest member of the Wayne Community School Board was sworn in during the regular school board meeting held on Jan. 21. Pollock was nominated and voted onto the board during a special meeting held on Jan. 9.

With the winter weather bringing many inches of snow, freezing rain and brutal cold temperatures, classes have been forced to delay several days or be missed entirely. As of press time, May 31 looks to be the last day of classes for Wayne students. This date could change again as the weather appears to be an issue in upcoming weeks.

Wayne Elementary teacher Patty Hackney was available to give a presentation on the after school program at the elementary. Hackney stated the focus is on academics, mainly reading with a ratio of six students to every one teacher.

She informed the board the students are required to be there 80 percent of the time. With this requirement, students are able to see progress and be more successful.

The board approved resignation requests from Coach Mike Jones, Elementary Teacher Andrea Tilley and Cook Rose Dunsmoor. The board also approved early retirement requests from Mary Kay Cusic, Paula Del Ponte and Karin Jones.

“These three are veteran teachers that have done a lot of good work and Wayne,” said Superintendent Dave Daughton.

The board also approved an open enrollment request for a kindergarten student to Central Decatur. With only one fuel bid received, the board approved the bid, which came in slightly less than previous years.

Daughton informed the board of a potential opportunity to share a social worker with Great Prairie AEA for one day a week, 20 percent of the time within Wayne. He stated he would look into more information and pursue this if the board was in agreement.

The board was in agreement this could benefit the school. This would be in addition to the current services already offered at Wayne.

Daughton also informed the board the home located at the land lab has been listed for sale. It was also noted the boiler cleanup has not cost the school any additional money as previously discussed.

In Wayne Pride Notes, the Wayne FFA Chapter was acknowledged for their selection into the top 15 for the Pioneer Brand A-Series Soybeans Big A Challenge. Hunter Cobb was also commended for his 100th wrestling career match win during the home meet held Jan. 17.

The next regular school board meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
