Falcon fans showed up to pack the house at Epperly Field Fri. Aug. 24 for the Falcon football season opener.
The visiting Woodward Academy Knights brought all of their passing game and lots of speed to this gridiron showdown.
The Falcons score first in the opening minutes on a 2 yard run in by Falcon QB Bret Whitehall. The strength of the Falcon front line defense forced the Knights into the long way around as linebackers Brady Langloss, Jeff Alexander, and Hunter Clark plugged the gaps behind the line. DE’s Spenser Buban, Dayton Jacobsen, and Hunter Cobb were intent and denied any Knights short passing gains.
The Falcon defensive line deserve the game ball in this slug fest as they dominated the middle lanes all night in this matchup, putting big time pressure on Knights QB Kadence Marple in the pocket and forcing some hurried action to the outside and deep pass attempts.
Freshman Dayton Jacobsen intercepted one of those hurried pass attempts and returned it for 65 yards to set up the second Falcon TD on a run by Chase Keifer and 2 point conversion on a pass from Whitehall to Brooks Jacobsen. Falcons lead 14-6.
The Knights slip behind the Falcon secondary on a long pass play for another TD to get within a couple before the half.
With the score 14-12 and 2:56 left in the 2nd quarter, Keifer broke it loose and romped past the Knight secondary for a 42 yard run and TD. Falcons lead at the half 20-12.
Knights come out with their speed in the third period and score on a 4th and long pass off the arm of Marple from the Falcon 42 with 6:32 left. Falcons turn the ball over on downs with 2:39 to play and give up a six off of another Marple 30 yard bomb and a successful 2 point conversion. Falcons managed only 6 ground yards in the period after a 40 yard KO return by Brooks Jacobsen to start the 3rd. At the end of 3, Knights lead Falcons 26-20.
An unforgiving storm is no place for the timid as the Falcons regrouped on the field to define their purpose for showing up in this game. Coach Whitehall calls for a couple of timeouts and meets the team in the middle of the field with 10:02 left in the game; Falcons are down 6 after a dismal 3rd quarter, and a weeks worth of fumbles to overcome.
This game was not over tonight. The Falcon offensive line battered the Knights up the middle to lay down the tracks to the end zone as Keifer carved out the yards on the ground to put 6 more on the board.Game tied 26 all just before Hunter Clark rushes in for 2 extra and the Falcons take the lead with 4:32 left to play.
Falcon defense holds and the Knights attempts lost yards in the final 4 minutes of play. With a minute and 18 ticks left on the clock, the Falcons took over the ball on downs to ice any hopes for a Knight victory.
Falcons win 28-26.
Falcon Pride! Let's roll.
